[Billy ducks his head down even further than before, eyes clenching shut, one hand lifting to press against his forehead, grimacing like he's in pain or disoriented. He wants to help Teddy, wants to fix it all, make the problems vanish, make Teddy forget the horrible things he'd been through- just like-

....

But... he hadn't fixed anything. Not then, and not now, either. He can't just wave his hands and make these memories go away. Even if he wants it... what he wants has proven to be terrible and dangerous.]

I thought... I-I thought I could bring you back... I thought I could make everything right again... make a world where no one could hurt you again, I...

[But instead he'd created a construct of magic and memory, little more than an incomplete and empty shade. And all the while, Teddy had been alive and suffering.

His chest hurts, and his voice sounds strangled, nails digging unforgivingly into his scalp.]

I did that instead of trying to save you...

[Those nails won't dig for long, because Teddy lift his hand away easily, fingers moving to lace them through the spaces between Billy's, if only to keep his fingers to himself, or confined to Teddy's. This time, he does slide onto the bed, one arm sliding around Billy's waist while he brushes his lips against the spot where Billy was scraping. After some hesitation, that brush turns into a gentle kiss instead.]

It's like I told you earlier... you made a mistake. I know that, and you do, too. We all do crazy things when we think the... person we love is dead.

[How could Billy save him when he thought he was dead?]

I'm so sorry they did that to you... to us. But right now? All we can do is figure out what's next. Even if we don't know right now... I'll wait until we do.

[The unexpected embrace and the kiss to his temple makes Billy look up, his eyes drifting between blue and brown seemingly at random, as if moment by moment he's not sure of who he is or who he's supposed to be. Still, he seems to relax a little, though his brows furrow, his gaze skipping nervously between Teddy's face and the opposing wall. He's afraid, then calm, then frustrated, then grieving. Too many emotions to feel and no buffer to keep them at bay, no restraint to keep them to himself. He knows there's something seriously wrong with him. He knows that he should be acting very differently right now. How, though...

Well, if he knew, he'd do that. Fake it if possible, even though he's a lousy liar. Instead he slumps wearily against Teddy, trying to absorb some semblance of sanity through osmosis or something. It doesn't seem to be working.]

I shouldn't be here... I'm not safe to be around...

[...Lying would have been better, wouldn't it? He doesn't like how the truth sounds even when it comes out of his own mouth, and he goes tense at Teddy's side, his thoughts diving right into a mindless chant of "Idon'twanttogoIdon'twanttogoIdon'twanttogo"...

But what choice does he have? Why is he even allowed to live right now?]

[Teddy tries not to look too deeply into what Billy said, lest it makes an icy grip wrap itself around his heart. It's hard not to, though, and the mere indication makes that feeling happen anyway.

Rather, he tries not to dwell on it. He warps his arms around Billy's form, holding him against himself as if keeping him safe, hidden and protected from the world, and keeps his eyes on the wall.]

We can stay here for a while... or we can go home. Wherever you feel safest.

[And maybe... maybe, if they go home, the familiarity will help Billy a little. Maybe.]

[Billy lapses into another silence, glancing down. That... was that what he meant?

No...

Teddy should know better. He looks up, then leans in to rest his chin on Teddy's shoulder, gazing quizzically up at him. The hug is warm, comforting, and... not really anything he deserves, but if it makes Teddy feel better, it's fine.

He hopes it does.]

Not for me. For... everyone else.

[He's fine with being shot. It needed to happen- he needed to be stopped. He'd taken it too far. The rest of the village didn't deserve to be stuck with him when there's so much wrong with him.

Teddy, more than anyone, doesn't deserve it. But Billy's not sure he could tell him to leave, either.]

[Teddy's neck tenses slightly, though he's not sure if it's because of Billy's words or the fact that his shoulder's being touched. Probably a mix of both, his heart sinking more over the former than the latter. He's just come to accept that he's not quite as comfortable being touched so much right now.

He keeps his gaze on the wall, feeling Billy's eyes on him yet not able to meet them. It's what he thought, part of what he was fearing... And it makes the ice around his heart grip tighter, fingers closing around Billy's clothing. This is hitting a spot that he doesn't dare go towards, feeling it only in the rush of battle, when things start to get bad.

But there is no battle to focus on, save for the war in his own head.]

We've got the same options here. Stay here or go home. I left the clinic door unmarked, and not a lot of people just drop by our place. I don't mind either one.

...I should...

[Billy trails off, not sure of his own train of thought and derailing it awkwardly as he recognizes the tension of Teddy's body, feeling a wave of confusion because of it. He slowly slides his chin off of Teddy's shoulder again and pulls back a little, though he's trapped in the embrace and can't go far unless Teddy lets go. He doesn't understand, though- wasn't Teddy always comforted by touch? Hadn't he responded well to it in the past?

Was his touch... unpleasant now? But then why would Teddy be hugging him if it was?

He can't find a reason for it, and it frustrates him as much as it makes him feel stricken and kind of pathetic. He lifts a hand to press against his forehead, scrubbing it at a pace that is moving halfway towards frantic. What is he doing wrong? What is he supposed to say? How can he fix this...!?]

[Teddy frowns at first, unsure what Billy was trying to say, what his choice would be. It really is true that Teddy wouldn't mind either one; sure, he has more hopes for their place, and seeing it himself after a couple of weeks of not doing so would be wonderful. But...

Seeing Billy start to scrub at his face and hair makes him grow more concerned, and he moves one hand up to lace his fingers with Billy's again. Unlike before, he doesn't stop the movement right away; instead he merely slows it down until it comes to a halt.]

Billy - Billy... What's wrong? What is it?

Nnnn...

[Billy grimaces, resisting Teddy's grip, fingers stretching to try and reach at his scalp. Is it- is it good? To do that? Teddy had touched him again when he tried, so- maybe-]

Have to... have to get it out... it's in my head and I don't want it there... I want it out...

[He could try chanting, but chanting's dangerous now. Chanting ruined things. Still, if he could just... if he could get it out of his head, if he could get the magic to cooperate just right...]

[The words worry him so, so much. Whatever's possessing him is in his head, and he can't get it out... And Teddy isn't sure how to get something like that out either. He's nowhere near knowledgeable enough on these things.

Still, he pulls Billy's hand down, down to his side rather than near his head again. He does know one thing, at least.]

Scratching at your head isn't going to get it out of there, B... It just hurts. [...] I don't want to see you hurt... [It's hard enough, always seeing him hurt and never being able to do anything, never able to be hurt by his side, always healing before he does. It's one of the times he wishes he didn't have his healing, although he is grateful for it during this whole experience. Who knows where he'd be if he didn't have it... probably actually dead.]

...but I can't fix it like this. I can't... I want to...

[It's a low murmur, fingers still twitching, and a gentle electric shift in the air follows the gesture, a soft glow fading on and off within the shadows between their bodies. Even the scent of what he's doing is unmistakable, fire and ozone and sparks. And then his voice lifts, falling almost subconsciously into old habits-]

[Teddy had noticed the signs and already let go of Billy's hand, so it takes no time at all to cover his mouth, the other holding his cheek to get Billy focused on him, voice steady, yet forceful enough to get attention.]

Billy, stop. Remember what happened last time you tried to use your magic while you that thing was in your head? You said so yourself that it isn't safe right now.

[Slowly, he loosens his hold on Billy's jaw.] ... Are we good?

[Billy hesitates, his eyes glancing down at the hand over his mouth before lifting back up to meet Teddy's gaze. He knew that voice- Teddy didn't talk like that unless he really meant it. This is serious.

He... should have known that, shouldn't he.

Hesitantly, he nods, not moving otherwise. He can't use magic. Not right now. He's too tired, too confused, too... wrong. Even though he wants to- even with the chanting- even with the knowledge that surely, surely he can do anything with it-

And that's about when he feels something wet and warm trickle down to drip against Teddy's finger. He frowns. Yes, he's good. But that's... probably not...?]

[Teddy tries to squash down the panic that rises as soon as he sees the blood, as much as it wants to break out of him and make him call a doctor as soon as the blood leaks onto his fingers. He pulls his hand back, letting Billy see the redness against his fingers, and then he lets out a shaky sigh, leaning in until his forehead touches Billy's.]

You know what this means, right? No more magic for a little while. Just a little while, until this is over. Promise me?

[Even his voice seems a little shaky. It's very, very hard not to let his concern overtake everything else.]

[Billy does nothing for a moment, not wanting to jar the connection between their foreheads, but before long he nods his head rather than keep Teddy hanging for long.]

No... more magic.

[It's not exactly a promise, but as he pulls back to wipe a hand under his nose to check the blood, he looks sufficiently spooked that it's close enough.]

...sorry...

Mmm.

[He's not exactly saying that it's okay, because, well... It's not okay, none of this is okay, and Teddy can't lie that much. Still... He doesn't want to leave it at that.

Teddy leans forward a little, as if he wants to touch foreheads again, but then hesitates. Billy had stayed, stayed in his touch, so it's... Maybe it's okay. Or maybe he thought of the fake -

No, focus.

He doesn't touch foreheads, but he does brush his clean hand through Billy's hair until he gently touches the back of his neck, fingers resting against the collar of this shirt.]

Hey. We'll fix this.

[Billy nods hesitantly, closing his eyes and leaning unconsciously into the touch, craving more but unwilling to ask for it. Teddy was already giving him so much more than he'd ever expected, after what he'd done. He can't possibly make any demands of him, even if all he wants to do is curl up against his boyfriend and not move for days.

It's just... he feels like himself again, when Teddy's touching him. Grounded, stable, like those hands are his lifelines. He's lost without them, and just knowing they're there is...

He shudders, lifting a hand to curl his fingers around Teddy's arm, holding on to him. It's loose, as he's not holding Teddy in place, but it's... firm. Wanting. No- needing. Needing him there.]

I don't... know how...

[When Billy's hand rested on his arm, Teddy thought that he was going to pull him away. It would've made sense; he touched a rather intimate place, and if Billy was caught up on - on the fake, then he, he -

But he didn't move his arm. It's more like he kept it there, and for a moment, Teddy stares down at his fingers. More than anything, Teddy just wants to sweep Billy into his arms and kiss him and revel in the fact that he's alive, they're both alive, and Teddy'd missed him so much -

But he just... doesn't know anymore. He has no idea what Billy wants from him. Taller? Broader? Skinnier? Shorter? More silent, like the fake was?

God, he hasn't been so unsure for... what? Two years now? But if Billy is keeping him there...

Everything that's bothering Teddy doesn't really matter in the face of Billy's uncertainty, and how lost he looks. So, Teddy wipes his other hand against his pants, then brushes his fingers against Billy's temple while he leans in again, pressing their foreheads together once more.

Billy needs this. Stable touches like this, an anchor, something grounding. And somewhere inside the storm of his own uncertainty, Teddy needs this, too.]

Then we'll figure out. That's what we do, right? We might not have the answer right away... but we will. We'll fix this.

I'm scared, Teddy...

[Billy shudders, letting his hand slide up to press over Teddy's, holding it against him, letting more tears slip down his cheeks, though he doesn't break down entirely this time. Crying is better than the alternatives, though, which are casting or sleeping (both of which he's done far too much of recently). Crying feels like a normal reaction, a way to feel, or rather, to let himself feel everything he's been forcibly burying under a mountain of false realities. Even if it's just for a little while, even if he knows it won't last, even if it hurts so badly it's like his heart and soul's being crushed, he wants it.

He can't hide from true reality forever, after all.

And Teddy's letting him do this. How could he ever, ever think to replace him? How could he ever believe that his magic, his imagination could recreate what was already perfect for him?

If I'd made him, he would have abandoned me for someone better a long time ago.

Teddy deserves someone who isn't so broken, doesn't he? of course he does. And it's not like he wants to be, but...]

...what if I can't come back from this?

[What if he loses his mind, what if his own magic or whatever's in his head beats him, what if he just- what if he chose to-

....

It's hard to imagine them coming out on top, here.]

You will.

[Teddy sounds so certain, and he really does have no doubt that Billy will beat this. This is a huge obstacle, it is, but he's seen Billy's goodness, his vitality and spirit; he's seen him beat out another spirit that possessed him, he's seen him beat the trauma that came from the Cube, he's seen him do all kinds of amazing things.

This is one huge hurdle, one that will take quite a bit of time to get over. But Teddy has nothing but faith in Billy's ability to beat this, as well.

He doesn't wipe his tears away, doesn't encourage him to stop. He figures Billy needs this as much as he needs to be touched and grounded. As much as he doesn't like to see him cry... It's something of a blessing right now. He simply strokes the tiny little hairs at the back of Billy's neck and keeps his other hand where it is.]

It might take a while... But you will. And if you ever need me, I'm always going to be right here. You just need to tell me if you do.

... I'll wait as long as it takes, you know.

[That makes Billy fall silent for a long moment, the only sound he makes a quiet sniffle once in a while. It isn't right. It isn't right at all.]

You... you shouldn't.

[It's muffled, very quiet, as if he's afraid to say it too loud, as if he's not sure if he wants Teddy to hear it at all. He can't seem to stop himself, though.]

You should just... no, I should...

[Just fade away. Just go. After what he did, how could he ever hope to make Teddy happy? Why would he want to force Teddy to take care of him like this for god-knows how long?]

What you should do is not finish what you were going to say.

[His fingers curl slightly against his neck; Teddy does not like where this is going already.]

I love you, Billy... And if you need help with this, I will, I promise. But I'm gonna need a little faith in me on your end... all right?

[Was there ever any faith in him after he showed what kind of stupid, freak of a person Teddy really - no, focus.]

It's not you I'm worried about.

[Billy seems to sink down into himself a little, shamefaced, fearful again. Teddy hadn't lost faith. Teddy hadn't given up. Teddy hadn't... he hadn't...]

I... didn't wait for you. How can I expect you to wait for me? Without even the same guarantee that I'll...

[Teddy hadn't even died. But Billy'd thought he had. He knew he'd be back in a week, and that hadn't stopped him from creating that- thing- that copy-]

[That... hurts, the notion that Billy wouldn't wait again. If Teddy was gone, or died here, or something, would Billy... move on that quickly? That's - It's not how Billy would normally act, he knows - knows that Billy is devoted and loyal.

It's just Teddy himself who is so worthless that Billy probably wants to leave

His neck tenses again for an entirely different reason, and the hand at the back of Billy's neck goes still, eyes drifting downward. It's not that Teddy would ever lose faith, never ever, but would Billy lose it in him so fast?

If Teddy went crazy like this, would Billy be gone before he even knew it?

... No, he wouldn't. He'd be at his side and wait for him just like Teddy. He knows it, he knows it, and he has no idea why Billy's trying to brush that notion off.]

... Because I know you. [Except for the part where he didn't know how much Billy disliked - stop] And I know that if you didn't have this thing in you, and it happened to me instead... You'd be where I am now. You'd wait for me. This... thing isn't going to warp the fact that I know you, B.

[He wants to believe that. God, does he ever. He just can't believe in himself the way Teddy does. He doesn't deserve that faith Teddy has in him; he honestly can't think of a single thing he's done to earn it right now. Is it because of the thing inside him, whatever Teddy was talking about- that strange weight on his mind that pushes and crushes his comprehension of what he should or shouldn't do, what's right to say or show or feel? Or is it because he just- hasn't? Hasn't earned it... even after everything.

Too late to earn it now.]

You're not supposed to love someone who does horrible things to you... you're supposed to cut them out of your life. Move on. Let them be horrible all by themselves and find people who treat you like you deserve.

[He's not one of those people- not anymore.]
