[Wow, okay, he's serious. Billy slowly and reluctantly bookmarks the novel, because seriously, outside it is cold, but he does it because Teddy seems really interested in whatever he's plotting. So okay, he can brave the cold and/or play along. Teddy deserves some fun.]

Is there a particular reason that we're going out today? Did I forget something? Or are you just feeling the cabin fever?

[Though they'd been at school all morning, so that's probably not it.]

Is "because I feel like it" an acceptable enough answer?

[Teddy makes his way to the door to grab his own coat, a duffle bag carrying all that he needs beside it. There's a pause as he slides the coat on, and - ]

Or if you want more than that, "things have been crappy lately, and we usually get away for a while when that happens, so this is our getting away".

...I will accept either of those answers.

[It's been more than a month since their anniversary, anyway. They're probably due. And they have been getting progressively better - with themselves, each other, and the rest of the population in general - but there are still... days. Days that don't merit thinking about.

Teddy's right. So with a quiet exhale he pushes himself off the couch, zipping his hoodie and pulling the coat on. He adds a scarf and mitts to the set because what is body heat, and glances over at Teddy.]

Okay, ready. Do your worst, or lead on, or whatever.

[All Teddy has on is his coat, because that's really all he needs. Duffle bag in one hand, Teddy unlocks and opens the door with the other, then takes Billy's hand to lead him on. It's an uneventful trip downstairs, but once they're outside, Teddy gets his arm around Billy to pull him to his side. Space heater is here for you, bf.]

We're going to one of the lakes. Kind of a long walk, but it'll be worth it.

[The incredulous look Billy gets on his face at that is kind of impressive.]

The lake? Did Tommy dare you to see if Skrees will freeze in ice water? Because I have no desire to be a part of- [Murder-suicide? ....Nope, nope, nope.] ...That.

[And Teddy gives him an incredulous look right back, because what Billy, how was that the first thing to jump to your head. Also Skrees. What.]

Yeah, no. I'm not jumping to be a part of the polar bear club. Besides, the lake's frozen over. [He hefts the bag over his shoulder, the skates within coming to mind when he thinks about the lake.] And I don't feel like punching through ice just to test a theory.

That bag is kind of suspicious, so Billy's eyeing it now that they're out the door, though he can't see it very well when he's pressed up against Teddy's side. Hmmm. Was that a clinking he heard?]

Okay, no swimming. Good. So am I right in assuming that it's some kind of surprise, and you're not going to tell me what we're up to?

[Not legit since there's only one Skrull/Kree hybrid in the entire universe, and besides why does he have to have the same name as the squeal fangirls let out.]

Yup. [He rubs Billy's shoulder, then looks down at him with a half smile.] You've got to promise not to back out of it, too. Or at least give the surprise a try.

[It's adorable, shush and submit to your fate.

Billy quirks a brow, still dubious. His track record for keeping promises lately isn't exactly stellar, after all.]

The latter, I'll give you. Cautiously. You know I'm not great with surprises.

[Admittedly, Teddy-surprises are better than other surprises pretty much always.]

Certain surprises, anyway. [It kind of reminds him that he needs to think about what to do for Billy's birthday. Damn, between their anniversary, Christmas, and Billy's birthday, that's a lot of things to think up for him...]

And since I don't want to get any closer to ruining the surprised, we'll talk about something else instead.

[Which is easy to do - again, something Teddy's grateful for ever since that awful month, when getting Billy to talk to him had been a rarity. They talk until they reach the lake which, as Teddy knew already, has a thick sheet of ice over it.]

Ah. Here we are.

[In part, Billy's disappointed; he keeps getting this feeling that he's not going to like whatever Teddy has planned, so falling into easy, familiar conversation had made him much less uncertain about it all. And now that they're here, that unease is coming back with a vengeance. What the heck would Teddy want to do at an abandoned, frozen lake?]

Okay... so what's the plan now?

[With that question, Teddy squats down, unzips the duffle bag, aaaand pulls out two pairs of skates, one larger and one smaller. He holds the both of them up, an innocent grin on his face.]

Ice skating. [And in the next beat, Teddy rocks to his butt to start pulling off his shoes. Sure, he could shift some skates on. But it is so uncomfortable to skate on what is essentially his own bare feet.]

[.....

.....

Fuck.]

Skating?

[Oh god. His boyfriend is trying to kill him.]

Skating.

[He sets the smaller skates beside his boyfriend - the right size, he checked - and starts to pull his own on and lace them up.]

What, don't know how?

[...Ugh, and he'd promised to try it, too. Billy stares balefully at the skates for a long moment, then reluctantly sits down to put them on.]

Isn't that something you should've asked before we came out here? It won't be much fun for you if you have to pull my flailing self around.

[Which is a sullen way of saying no, he cannot skate.]

Hey, come on. It'll still be fun.

[Teddy pauses for a moment to look over his shoulder, sending Billy a smile.]

I'll just teach you how. It's not that hard once you get the motions down. [Like riding a bike.]

[That smile is making it difficult to be annoyed, here. Dammit.

Once the skates are on, Billy gives them a couple of experimental slides over the snow. Sure doesn't feel like riding a bike. He's done this a few times before, as a kid. Tried hockey once, when his dad was in that annoyingly sweet phase of thinking he knew where Billy's interests might lie. (It was a mercifully brief phase.) None of them went particularly well. Coordination was part of it - not many kids are at that age - but the biggest, worst part, was the other kids. There was no greater target than a failing newcomer to a "real man's sport".

He didn't think Teddy was like that. But the memories and the prospect of looking like a fool and falling on his ass aren't helping his confidence any.]

Why do people always say that about things they're already good at?

You say that like I'm actually good at it.

[With his own skates on, Teddy slowly gets out onto the ice - He does wobble a little at first, but otherwise, he's up and ready to go.]

I know how to go forward and stop, and that's pretty much it. [He holds out both of his hands for Billy to grab on to.] Just enough to make people think I know what I'm doing.

...So if you don't know what you're doing, and I don't know what I'm doing, why are we doing this?

[He takes Teddy's hands despite his words, allowing the other boy to pull him to his feet. And of course that's when the wobbling begins. His eyes widen, stumbling and sliding forward, staring at the ice like he's expecting it to either trip him up or crack under his feet.]

To - whoa, hey -

[Teddy grins and chuckles as Billy stumbles and wobbles and slides, hands still holding on to Billy's, but never once outright laughing at him. If anything, he looks thrilled. They're trying new things together, and Billy is actually this with him, however grudgingly.]

- To take our minds off of things. It's okay, I got you.

[He doesn't necessarily know how to skate backwards, but he can drift and at least attempt it with stiff legs of his own. Still, he refuses to let Billy fall while he's got his hands on him.]

[Dammit, Teddy, stop looking so happy, it's actually impossible to be angry, now. Teddy's enthusiasm is kind of infectious, so while he isn't smiling yet, he doesn't quite look as scowly as before.]

Oh, good, we can both end up on our butts when I inevitably fall over, then.

I'm not letting you fall as long as I've got you.

[For now, he stays where he is, still supporting Billy and righting him when he looks like he's tipping over too much.]

Just tell me when you don't feel like you're going to fall over in the next second.

How am I supposed to know that? Every time I feel like I've got myself balanced, I slip again.

[All he can see are his feet slipping and sliding and skidding all over the ice. He can't imagine that getting any better.]

[Haha... Billy's doing the one thing that all new skaters do, yet it's the one thing that's their downfall as well.]

Because you're focusing too much on that. [Or, well, that didn't make much sense, so he ducks his head, trying to get Billy to look at him.] You've got your eyes on your feet. You're not going to know what's ahead of you if you keep watching them.

[....

....

That... sounds disturbingly familiar. It takes a moment for those words to really sink in, for Billy to digest them properly; you can practically hear the wheels turning in his head. He's said that before, trying to teach Teddy how to dance. But that was different, wasn't it? Surely the two can't be that similar.

It takes a few long moments, but finally, Billy lifts his eyes uncertainly to meet Teddy's instead of watching their feet. God, he looks so happy...]

So... what, I should be looking at you, instead? Is that a pick-up line, Altman?
