I think you're mistaking mechanism and principle.

Our mechanism is much faster because we require no intermediaries like machines. We are in direct communication with the universe.

But we are still manipulating the same sorts of things. [He smiles.] Only we're much better at it because we can use the rules, or bend them or break them. I don't think science has gotten that far yet. At least not the science I've seen in here.

[He nods.]

I can, I think.

Okay- if you can, then show me.

[He wants to see it before he addresses anything else that Loki said; he has a theory and he'd like to roll with it.]

All right.

[Loki cups his hands. He knows the mechanics of this now, moving molecules to create heat, a fuel source, everything needed. He doesn't need to think about it any more. A small, controlled flame like a candle appears in the air over his hands.]

[Billy leans in to watch while he calls up the fire, brows furrowing.]

If we were to do that naturally we'd need, what- something to burn, and a match or some sticks to rub together, something substantial. But magic just makes it appear. That's what makes it different for me. Feels too much like you're getting something for nothing, you know?

I see what you mean.

I have created those things for it, however, so it might sustain itself.

[He smiles crookedly.]

And it isn't free, though, is it. It takes from us, a bit at a time.

Energy, right? That's why I feel tired after I try to cast. It's not free, but it's a pretty big difference from regular science.

[Loki nods.]

The devices of science have their own, much less efficient power sources.

Though I have begun to think that it might be possible to draw on that power, and thus not have to use our own energy.

[That piques Billy's curiosity, brows lifting.]

What, like gas-powered magic wands or something?

[...Well. Curiosity =/= seriousness.]

[Loki laughs.]

Have you seen the man wandering about, with the blue light in his chest, Tony Stark? 'tis a power source. For example, I think I might be able to communicate with it and thus draw power directly from it to use instead of my own internal energies.

Of course, I would not do that in reality, as I fear it would put his life in danger. But if we could build another such power source...

Though perhaps not one powered by hugs.

[Any hope of replying to Loki's response is completely lost in light of two things. One:]

Truly? Are you implying that I might speak in an odd fashion?

[Actually, he has noticed that he's a little... archaic in comparison with some. But only a little. He's not sure why that would be.]

...yes, I thought it was a little strange myself. I think it might be a joke being played on him by whoever wrote those damned cards. I certainly noticed no fluctuation in the power source when I hugged him.

[Loki: blissfully unaware that anything he says right now may come back to haunt him later.]

[Wooooow. This Tony guy sounds like an odd one. He makes a mental note to avoid chest-glowing strangers until he decides whether or not he likes random hugs. (Because he's pretty sure he doesn't.)]

...Well. Maybe if we all get our memories back he can build you a better, uh, non-hugging model. I'd be interested in testing that theory out, myself.

That would be my hope! It would be most useful, I think. It would certainly give us something with which to work. Until then, our options are much more limited...

Work our way up, then, maybe. What else could we try?

[By now he's sold on the idea either way.]

Hm... I haven't encountered anything so powerful or pure, yet. I don't think the power that operates the lights will do at all...

Do you have any ideas?

I'm telling you, gas-powered wands. Totally the way to go.

[Okay, no, seriously. Uh.

What about steam? Might be messy, but it's about as natural a source as you can get. And water's literally everywhere.

[Loki snorts, though he then looks thoughtful.]

I feel as if the question is if it produces enough power to be worth the effort...

Hm. But I think you've a point. And it's not a question, to begin with, if the source produces more power than it would take effort on our part. More a proof of concept, no?

So that's a very good idea.

[Joking aside, though, he's glad that it might actually be a useful suggestion. Just a matter of figuring out how to put it into practice.]

We ought to work on this together. Two minds are better than one.

I can get behind that idea. It's not like we aren't already teaming up for magic.

Aside from the... nasty beginning to our week, I don't seem to be able to forget anything at all once I've heard it. [Loki grins.] 'tis very useful for reading.

If we're a team, do we need some sort of official cheer?

Only if it doesn't require pom-poms and a miniskirt. Or synchronized gymnastics. I don't think I can pull that off.

...I don't think I know what any of those things are. Should I be glad?
