Are you kidding? Tell me you're kidding. Yeah, you're definitely kidding.

[He doesn't look like he's kidding.]

[Loki points up toward his own face.]

This is not my kidding face.

[Though no lie, he is feeling very amused.]

Vakri is an Aesir horse you know. I'd have thought you'd be wild for the opportunity.

[He knew that, he really did. But he wishes Loki would stop smiling.]

I like the idea of, you know. Looking at horses. Petting them, if they're not snappy. But riding? Are you trying to get my neck broken?

I think Vakri would be quite hurt that you have so little faith in him.

Shouldn't Vakri be more cautious about the high likelihood of my running him into a tree?

[He rode a motorcycle once with Rogue. He's lucky he didn't kill himself then.]

I think he'd be even more hurt you have so little respect for his intellect.

[He digs Vakri. He's pretty sure half the time the damn horse is smarter than he is.]

Seriously though, isn't he... kind of advanced for me? I think I'd be out of my league with a carnival pony.

Only a foolish teacher would start a new rider on an ill-trained horse. [Loki shakes his head.]

The point is that he's my horse. A magician's horse. His greatest talent is in watching out for his rider.

[Another dubious look, his gaze switching between Loki and Vakri. It's not a no, but... hrngh...]

I am way too much of a city boy for this...

Your excuses are becoming increasingly flimsy. It's fun to watch.

They're not excuses! They're-

...Okay, fine, they're excuses. But they're not supposed to be entertaining.

[The only answer he gets there is a giggle.]

You know where Vakri's tack is. Kindly fetch it?

...I hate you.

[Without much venom in the tone, obviously- merely exasperation and a reluctant submission to his fate. He heads off to get aforementioned tack, lugging it back over to the stall, though he stops and faces Vakri down first.]

Um. So. Truce, then?

[Another fit of giggling answers that. Loki waits for Billy to come back with the tack.]

Anstå is the command you want. You're telling him to hold patiently.

[Oh god, is that what it sounds like?]

...I need to learn Asgardian to ride him?

Just a few verbal commands. They make things easier.

[His look plainly says, "Billy, stop being such a wimp, I know you can do this."]

[Don't look at him like that, he's a fantasy language enthusiast, he'd normally jump at the chance. He's just not used to having to do it in front of a native speaker. Kind of like trying to speak Sindarin in front of an elf.]

Um... okay. Anstå. Sorry.

[It isn't half-bad an attempt, at least. And he starts to head around to Vakri's side to start getting him set up, though he will definitely need help with this part. He can do the bridle since he's done care for the horse before, just... not the rest.]

[Loki nods approvingly. Good enough for now.] I'll teach you a few more commands as we continue on.

[And he does help Billy get the tack figured out and properly put on Vakri.]

Normally he will keep an eye on you and follow you, if you're out and about. But if you wish him to follow closely, as when you lead him fromt he stable, Følg.

[At least he knows this part well enough, so it's not scary yet. It's not something he's entirely comfortable with yet - Vakri's a big horse, and he's only done this a few times during Loki's last absence - but it's familiar.

He gives Vakri's nose a light pat and takes the reins, murmuring the command and starting towards the door.]

[Loki leads the way out into the exercise yard. Once there he tells Vakri to stay.]

All right, let us get you into the saddle, Billy. Foot in the stirrup, grab the cantle... that bit there, yes. And I'll give you a boost. Just concentrate on getting your leg up and over.

[What could possibly go wrong?]

[Let's make a list:

-he could trip and fall
-he could trip and fall and accidentally zap Vakri, who could then (justifiably) trample him
-he could kick Loki in the face
-and then get impulse-murdered horribly
-and then Teddy would get involved
-really it just wouldn't end well
-why is he getting on a horse again

Thankfully none of these things happen, although he very nearly slides off the other side once he's up there. Mostly what happens is he hunches over the saddle and clutches the pommel, feeling very high up and very not in control of the situation.]

...Have I ever mentioned that I used to be afraid of heights? Because I think I'm regressing.

[Addendum: he could throw up on the big scary Asgardian horse. And/or Loki.]

You're doing just fine, Billy. Sit up a bit straighter. [He circles around, prodding Billy a bit to improve his position in the saddle. Not perfect or even good, but serviceable.]

Vakri has been trained well and has a smooth gait. He will do what he can to keep you on his back. If you fall off of him, it will likely be your own fault. [Loki grins.] Just don't let him jump any fences. He thinks that's a game.

Have care to not cling too tightly with your knees. It may confuse him.

Um. Okay. [It feels like a lot to remember, but he blames that on the fact that being on a horse has him scatterbrained and mortified. A bit of an adjustment of his posture makes him feel... well, not okay, but a little bolder, perhaps, and he tries to loosen up. The last thing he wants to do is confuse his current mode of transportation, particularly because of the whole falling-off comment.]

Is there an Asgardian phrase for "please don't kill me"?

Doesn't exist in the language. You are supposed to be prepared to die gloriously at any moment, Billy.

[He does another round of poking and adjusting of Billy's posture.]

All right, let's walk a bit, just so you can understand the feeling of riding. [He tells Vakri to follow him and begins to walk around the exercise yard.]

Pretty sure there's nothing glorious about breaking your neck falling off a horse.

[He manages to keep from doing that as they move, though, gripping the reins so tightly his knuckles are white, but staying upright somehow. It's an odd feeling, a big animal body moving under him, and he opts to focus on Loki instead. As much as possible, anyway.]
