Sixteen, yeah. And I mean- I know the story about you being in the war and everything, but back on my world, Captain America's been saving the world before I was even born. I didn't find out the rest until I got older.

Of course it was. I was using to being smaller, slower and weaker. And then suddenly I'm racing down the New York streets and pulling doors off of cars. [He pauses, hearing how that must sound to Billy without him knowing the background story.]

To be fair I was chasing a HYDRA spy.

[Pfft. Okay, that story? Actually earns a laugh out of Billy. With all the ridiculousness going on this week, it fits right into the trend.]

A hero right out of the gates, huh? Why does this not surprise me.

[Steve grins a bit but the furrow of his brows indicates that he has no clue why Billy finds what he said so funny.]

Yeah, well that's what they needed me to be right? I wouldn't have been a very good choice if, when the moment came, I panicked and hide right? [Though he had been mostly running on anger as fuel. Erskine's death had hit him hard.]

[He flushes a little. Sure, he's been a hero by people before. A lot of people. But in this particular case he hadn't been trying to be a hero.]

I was just reacting to the situation. Nothing more.

Isn't that kind of the point? Heroes aren't heroes because they're looking for glory. They react to situations in a way that helps people.

[Steve considers that for a moment. He understands where Billy is coming from.]

You're right, absolutely. But there' a difference between react to a situation to help people, and doing it for your own reasons. [Although, after the spy took that boy as a hostage, it could be argued that Steve was after him for both reasons.]

Well, sure, but- most people don't start out as a hero. It's the kind of title you have to earn. I learned that the hard way.

When the team first got together - the original for Young Avengers, I mean - we kind of... got caught up in the whole "we're super heroes!" mentality way too early. I mean, we were just in training, so we weren't heroes yet, and the only thing super about us was that we had powers we could barely control. We were eager and... a little egotistical, I guess. And we tried to take down a criminal way too strong for us.

[Sigh. The Electro disaster is the great shame of Young Avengers history, really.]

We were a mess. Disorganized, clumsy, and we got our butts kicked for it. We could've gotten killed trying to be heroes before we were ready.

Okay, so you hit a rough patch starting out. But that doesn't make you any less a hero. Even when you make mistakes, the point is you stood for something. And that's always better than turning a blind eye.

I guess I keep expecting a big lecture. Back home the Avengers just wanted us shut down- that we're too young, or too inexperienced, or it's too dangerous. I get that you probably don't approve of it, but... I don't know. It's nice to be sort of accepted?

[He processes that for a moment before smiling.] You're right, I don't exactly approve. And I do think you're too young and inexperienced. But this is a dangerous place and there's no way I can stop you from fighting. When we get you all back home, the Cap in your world can lecture you all he wants. But for now, I'm honored to have you as an ally.

Billy just sort of stares for a long moment, looking like he's in a state of shock.]

I... that's... what? I-I mean, thank you. Sir. Really...

[He chuckles, amused by Billy's honest reaction. But he means every word.]

You're welcome. And you can tell Teddy I feel the same about him.
