[Y! Mostly because William doesn't like to risk being spotted outside of the magic act, since it really is a bit of a silly get-up even on the poor streets where no one should care about appearances. He has his pride, both in his own family and individually. He's also trying to sneak off and meet up with Ted, and he's glancing around for him instead, so he doesn't even notice Shikamaru coming until it's too late.]

[And hark! Looking far too amused with himself, a figure pops out from the side alongside William from out of nowhere like a ninja.]

[Oh god, he knows, he can't even hide the cape or hat or anything-]

[He snorts, sticking his hands in his pockets.]

Were you dropped on your head when you were born? I live around here.

That isn't- I mean- [Wow, and he's usually so coherent around his family. He's two for two on today's humiliation.] You weren't supposed to be here here!

[Oh this is going to entertain him for months. He wishes he were mean enough to prolong it - it's not often he gets to see Will riled up like this. Instead he holds up a hand, waving his brother's rising anxieties off.]

Oh, cool it already. I don't see what you're fussing about. That was a slick show you had there. I'm glad I got to see it.

[He's not sure if he should be terrified of Shikamaru's compliment, or terrified. He could be genuine, or just indulging him to hold it over his head later.]

Oh yeah. 'Course, I'd have liked it better if you hadn't been avoiding my side of the crowd like a square, but what I saw of it was entertaining.

Why keep it a secret? Magic's in that, what do you call it... artsy category you upper types dig, so that checks out. [He strokes the underside of his chin, then drops it with a shrug.] Unless it's that you got your allowance cut and don't want anyone catching you making a little bank.

[It's a bit louder and more high-pitched than he'd intended, and a light blush crosses his cheeks as he settles down.]

I don't know if I'd like one or the other more. But I do like not risking getting myself into trouble over it. At least not until I'm old enough to be on my own.

Not long. Another year, maybe two depending on where I end up. I haven't made any decisions yet.
