selfhelp: ([billy] seriously? you're calling a cab?)

[Voice/Action]

[Today is a good day for serious business, apparently. There's a certain something he's been putting off for a while, and after one-too-many dreams interrupting his sleep, he's had enough: this morning when Billy wakes up, the first thing he does is jot out a note in the journal-]

[Private to Ben Grimm]

Hey, would it be okay if I swung by to ask you a few things?

[He'll work through his morning routine until he gets a response, after which he'll go for a visit and get a hell of a lot more than he bargained for.

After that, his mood for the day is drastically altered; he'll skip out on school, trying to sort out his feelings on the matter. Tommy's still AWOL, and he's trying not to worry Teddy, but what he's just been told has really got him thinking- about people, and heroes, and the unfairness of mankind in general. And eventually he'll just go ahead and return to his journal for it. He's kind of in over his head here.]

[Open to All]

I know Luceti's full of heroes- seems kind of a standard trait for most of us, for whatever reason. Back on my world, super-humans aren't that uncommon, and in general they're revered for everything they do for the world. Some of them were born that way, and some of them are from other planets, and some were altered to get their powers, and some have a lot of talent or skill instead of powers. But they're all considered to be super heroes. There's bad guys, too- just as diverse and unique as the heroes they fight. People fear them and celebrate their defeat.

There's another group, though... humans who got their powers because of evolution. It's much more natural, in a lot of ways. Some are heroes, some are villains. Some are just trying to get by without becoming one or the other. But regular humans fear them, and hate them for it, even if they save the world just as much as the heroes they love. They're called criminals or monsters, no matter how innocent they might be.

[He hesitates- it's probably obvious to some, what he's talking about, and he's not sure if he should lock it from the mutant population, or apologize, or something, but it relates to them even if it's not by name. Hiding it wouldn't be right.

In the end he just leaves it be.]

...Sorry for the ramble. But it's not fair, and... I just can't understand why. Why hate one and love the other, when they're basically the same?

[Luke's eyebrows rise in consternation at the thought. That...sounded like something the Empire might do.]

That...isn't right. Governments aren't meant to do things like that. That's horrific. And, I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say except that they should take a stand.

Billy, pardon if I'm prying but are you one of those people? I understand if you don't want to talk about it.

[He chooses to sit along the bed.]

It's okay. People here seem to know a lot about mutants already... or nothing at all, depending on who you ask. [It's all so very disorienting and confusing.] But first, can you tell me... [He looks towards Billy in concern.] Did anything specific happen to make you ask this now?

Hate is easier because you don't have to look at yourself. People really don't like looking at themselves.

[He lets out a soft breath at the question, thinking it over, because it deserves real consideration.]

I can't say I've really come across people with powers in my own world. Not besides the Asgardians and people like Steve and Banner.

But here... so long as they're not being used against me or maliciously, I don't see why I'd resent anyone. And I could say the same thing for any idiot with a gun.

I'm still me. I'm still the best at what I do. People wit powers don't change what I've done.

Yup! Turns out the whole thing was a huge misunderstanding, and the only 'curse' we got hit with came from this annoying plant called Poison Joke.

[It probably sounds silly, maybe even a little weird, but hey! At least it's a happy ending.]

[He studies the little chart for a moment. Hm...] The more human-like something is, the greater reason humans have to scrutinize the differences. They want to convince themselves that they are superior to the non-humans who are so similar to them.

...

[In all honesty he should've seen this coming eventually, especially if Suzie brought it up with him. It wasn't something he liked thinking about, and for a moment he's tempted to kick the kid out and never think about it ever again. Ever. Some of that might show on his face, his hand going tight enough on the knob to cause the mettle to give. The crunch of it snaps him back to the present and he jerks his head deeper into the apartment with a vague grunt. He'll talk. He just needs time to get his head together.]

... The Scarlet Witch?

[He wonders about how he should feel, and what he is feeling now. Should he be worried and upset? Probably. Should he be concerned about Billy, being the possible soul-son of the Scarlet Witch, with his powers mirroring hers, and wonder if he could do something like that? Maybe. It's something to keep in mind, at least.

But he doesn't feel these things. Instead, he's mostly just... confused. Wanda loved her team. She loved what she fought for, even flip flopped between sides because of it. He's surprised, because he expected it to be some unexplained, complicated phenomena that either had to do with space or time travel (because everyone knows how everyone else feels about time travel).

The movement of his fingers in Billy's hair stops as a result, and he frowns slightly, showing those feelings he has. Confusion and surprise, and none of the real fear and worry he maybe should be feeling right now.]

But... why? What made her do that? [Wanda, who once approached Billy just because he looked like he needed someone to talk to. Wiping out a mass number of mutants...?]

Then I hope you've got a backup plan when one of your heroes does something in his best interest. Desperation makes people do terrible things sometimes. There's a long way to fall when you've got unrealistic expectations of the world around you.

[ Wow, this sounds kind of like the problems Equalists had with benders. It takes him a while to articulate it properly though. ]

Sometimes people are just looking for someone to blame. In my world there's this group called the Equalists and they hated benders because they thought we were abusing our powers.

I guess when people are upset or feeling powerless, they pick a group of people that they think are responsible and put everything on them, even if not everyone in that group's responsible.

...what do you want to know?

[Ben feels as rough and raw on the inside as his rocky hide. Everything too tight and itching just at the idea he'd be talking about this. What he'd been. What he'd done. What he'd lost. He closes the door and makes a mental note to do something about the knob tomorrow. Buys himself some time grabbing a ball of lead he'd snagged from the smithy- he'll need something to mess with if he's going to talk about this.]

Pretty much. People don't understand change, or they don't want it, or they're afraid of looking stupid. People who are different usually aren't appreciated until long after they're dead, you know?

[The frown on his face deepens while he focuses on Billy's collarbone, though he picks up the movement of his fingers though his hair again. All these things happened, but he can't remember details like that. Especially not the fact that Magneto's family ruled the world. He ought to remember something like that, but there's nothing, no matter how hard he tries to do so. It's like hearing a story, except it really happened.]

So she just lashed out at everyone... [And she certainly could. She has that kind of power and all.] Well, Magneto's obviously not ruling the world anymore, so what happened?

Our mutations are gifts, to be sure, but I would hardly call being a mutant a glamorous life.

And I'm sure you would have felt differently, Billy. Not necessarily in a bad way, mind. But it's different, actually experiencing the life of a mutant and all that comes with that kind of life.
