I hope we exist in your universe somewhere, so you can meet her someday. She's... really special. One of the strongest people I know.

[He can't help but smile at that.]

She sounds like she must be quite something. I think I'd like to meet her someday.

Then maybe the rest of us can sit back and enjoy the Hawkeye tag-team.

Yeah, that's her. She's my best friend and my partner in SHIELD.

[...Oh wow, they really are close. Billy mulls over that for a moment, drumming his fingers against the counter.]

You should stick with the Avengers- they're better for you than SHIELD is.

[That gets a raised eyebrow, his expression becoming more serious.]

SHIELD has been good to me. I would've been nothing but a killer if they hadn't recruited me. Well, they didn't exactly give me much choice but... it worked out.

...Mm.

[Billy can't really argue with that without giving good reason for it, something he's not prepared to do after promising to keep the Civil War business under wraps. He sits in silence for a long moment, then finally shrugs his shoulders.]

It's just a thought.

If there's something you know...

[And there obviously is, if he's warning Clint away from SHIELD like that, although he doesn't know if it's relevant to his version of SHIELD.]

I'll think about it. I know you about as well as I know them, honestly.

[They're okay. They're safe.

Teddy had almost thought he wouldn't be able to keep his promise. When he'd been sitting alone in front of Billy's cell with that broken spear/makeshift bo staff across his lap (which is now laying beside the bed - he likes that thing okay) and staring down at the floor, he thought they were both going to die. The cure wouldn't be made, and Loki would come down the stairs and stab him first, then go after Billy.

Almost. He'd still held tightly to it, still looked up with hope every time the stairs so much as creaked. And, in the end, his optimism didn't fail him, and he had practically sagged with relief when people other than Loki came down the stairs with the cure.

And now they're here. And god, Teddy's so happy right now; his own eyes shut when Billy nuzzles their foreheads together, even if the bandage around Teddy's head gets in the way, and he lowers his head a little to make it a bit easier on Billy's neck. He's better off than he is right now, after all.]

Mm. I think I'd rather just sit here and be happy you're okay.

But maybe you should listen to me a little more.

I make no promises.

[His voice is quiet, musing, but he can't really keep the relief from his tone, either. He closes his eyes, sifting his hand gently through Teddy's hair over and over as long as he's close like this. It's so wonderful to be able to touch him again, to cozy up and kiss him without fear. He never wants to endure that kind of forced separation again.

They've done that song and dance before, and it hurts every time.]

How long have we been back? And what happened? I don't remember a thing...

[Billy is reluctant to say more; like Clint, he's not sure if it's even relevant, or if the future of their version of SHIELD will follow the same path.

It's a concern, is all.]

It's okay. Your SHIELD could be totally different from mine. I just think it's dangerous to mix government and superheroes.

[He can't say that he believes SHIELD wouldn't use them for their own ends, is the thing, even if he generally believes in those ends. What he doesn't believe in is who Fury has to answer to in the end.]

I can't deny there are people who would probably love to have heroes serving their purposes.

It's difficult to know. There's a lot of similarities between our worlds, but a lot of differences too.

The biggest difference is time, I think. You guys all started kind of... late, I guess. And twenty years is a long time to be doing something. It can change people.

[This is a pretty morose topic, though, so he doesn't say any more than that. He's already got Tony's promise that the civil war won't happen, but if everyone forgets, it's kind of a pointless reassurance, isn't it? And the same goes for warning people about SHIELD.]

...twenty years. Yeah, that's a lot of time to change.

Gotta say, I'm impressed with you guys being so heroic at your age.

Mm... we're not that great yet, but we're trying. I don't know if we'd be heroes at all if we hadn't had good role models.

[He gives a pointed look at that.]

[Ow. That look. That look could burn.]

Now that's just scary.

[His life so far has been a study in what not to do to be happy healthy and well adjusted.]

Don't be. If we did okay, then that means you guys did, too.

Right, well. Kudos to my alternate universe self and friends.

They've certainly earned it. I know you all will get there, too.

Assuming we don't kill each other first.

[It was a legitimate fear. That many conflicting personalities and agendas...]

We'll work it out. We have to.

[If Clint's watching closely, he might see Billy wince at that, but it's brief, covered up as he fishes through the bag to grab a bit of candy to munch, tossing one at Clint. Kill each other, right... because that never happens.]

It's not like you don't have time to work things out, so.

[Clint, unfortunately, is always watching closely. His eyes narrow, but he isn't going to push. Not yet. It isn't necessary.

He catches the candy and pops it into his mouth, grinning at Billy for that.]

If inspirational 80s rock starts up prompting a training montage, I am blaming you.

Don't be knocking the montage. It is a weapon to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry.
